Assistant Minister Job Description

FULL-TIME Position at St Bart’s Anglican Church, Toowoomba. Available from July 2019.

Over the past half decade, St Bart’s has experienced significant growth under God as we seek to make and mature disciples of Jesus. We’re seeking an Assistant Minister to be part of the leadership team, working closely with the Senior Minister, who will help lead and enable a range of key areas that are central to our mission. We have three congregations that meet every Sunday, each with a clear missional demographic. Differing in style, our congregations share the same DNA, values, and preaching. Whilst ordination as an Anglican priest would be an advantage, we would also consider appointing someone as an authorised lay stipendiary minister. 

Purpose of Role 

To work closely with the Senior Minister in leading key departments in the areas of Sunday Services along with Discipleship and Community. A special focus of the role will be to help grow our training centre to the next level (both in the regular offering of courses and in providing online resources). 

Key Responsibilities

Sunday Services

  • Regularly preach at our three Sunday Services (7.30AM, 9.30AM, 6PM).

  • Assist in the ongoing leadership of our three congregations, with a particular focus in leading 6PM. This  includes aspects of planning, rostering, team development, and strategy.

  • Help develop our vision beyond 2020, especially with regard to the potential for future growth.

  • Lead and develop an approach to university student ministry.

Pastoral Care (St Bart’s Care)

  • Be an active member of the St Bart’s Care Team (a team of 50 people) and help care for, and pastor, members of our church (and beyond). 

  • Work closely with the Pastoral Care Coordinator and be responsive to need.

  • Be involved with special services outside of our church where appropriate. 

  • POTENTIAL: Help develop ministry areas relating to refugees or people with a refugee background. 

St Bart’s Training Centre

  • Help lead our Discipleship and Community Department, particularly with regards to special events and ongoing activities relating to the maturing of disciples.

  • Take an active role in leading the St Bart’s Training Centre, overseeing its various ongoing activities along with special training events.

  • Helping to drive and grow a culture of maturing disciples. 

  • Organise, promote, and lead key training events throughout the year.

  • Develop our ‘next steps this week’ initiative as an active part of our approach to discipleship.

  • Help develop our physical library of resources along with our online resource presence. 

  • Development and management of our interns program.

  • Work with the Senior Minister in planning, shaping, and facilitating our leadership development program.

  • Further our role as a Resource Church in the life of our Diocese.

Selection Criteria

  • Meet all requirements for Diocesan Safe Ministry Check and ministry licensing.

  • Mature Christian with a passion for Jesus, making disciples, and proclaiming the Gospel. 

  • An implementer with excellent organisational and communication skills.

  • A mature leader with experience in leading large and diverse teams and/or departments. 

  • A team player who will inspire and work well with other staff team and volunteers.

  • On board with vision of St Bart’s (especially that described in VISION 2020).

  • Tertiary theological or ministry qualifications.

  • PREFERABLE: Experienced preacher.

  • PREFERABLE: Ordained Anglican minister. 

Position Details

  • Full-time role, reporting to Senior Minister, Adam Lowe.

  • Holidays: Four weeks per year. Study leave: Two weeks per year.

  • Remuneration as determined and negotiated according to Diocesan scales (which is dependent upon qualifications and experience). The package would include housing, car, and telephone allowances.

Ministry Intern or Music & Communications Minister

PART-TIME Position (3 Days/Week) at St Bart’s Anglican Church, Toowoomba. Available from September 2019.

We’re seeking a Ministry Intern or Minister to serve specifically in the area of music and communications. This role is pivotal in the planning and leading of our Sunday services, working closely with the ministry team (especially the Senior and Assistant Ministers). We have three congregations that meet every Sunday, each with a clear missional demographic. Differing in style, our congregations share the same DNA, values, and preaching.

Purpose of Role 

To work closely with the Senior Minister in leading the Sunday Services Department. An additional focus of the role is to be a key resource for our communications, particularly relating to our website, media, newsletters, and other publications. 

Key Responsibilities

Sunday Services & Music

  • Assist Senior Minister with the planning and leadership of our Sunday Services Department. 

  • Lead the music ministry at St Bart’s, with teams from each of our three congregations. This includes ongoing development (e.g., quarterly workshops) and growth of our teams, along with nurturing existing leadership within our music teams. 

  • Ensuring a high quality music ministry along with ongoing development of our teams.

  • Be actively involved in the weekly (and longer term) planning of our services. This includes selecting and having music in an appropriate and sensitive way.

  • Lead our weekly Sunday services team briefing and review. 

  • Maintain music selection on Elvanto and CCLI reporting. 

  • Ensuring church music equipment and technology are well maintained.

  • To assist in the ongoing leadership of our three congregations.

  • Optional: To regularly preach at our three Sunday Services (7.30AM, 9.30AM, 6PM).

Communications

  • Overall responsibility for maintaining and updating our website.

  • Leading the team of people involved in our social media (i.e., Facebook and Instagram).

  • Develop artwork and promotional materials for events, preaching series, and general advertising.  

  • Responsible for our weekly eNewsletters.

  • Develop videos for various occasions throughout the year. 

Selection Criteria

  • Meet all requirements for Diocesan Safe Ministry Check and ministry licensing.

  • Mature Christian with a passion for Jesus, making disciples, and proclaiming the Gospel. 

  • A gifted musician and vocalist. 

  • Highly organised with excellent communication skills.

  • A team player who will inspire and work well with other staff team and volunteers.
